A classroom adventure that's taking over 2020 and we couldn't be more excited.
What started as a simple investigation into the difference between invertebrates and vertebrates has grown into one of the most exciting projects we've ever done at Thandi House. We are exploring the full classification of the animal kingdom (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians ) and each species gets its very own printed fact card, placed within its natural environment: ice and snow, ocean, forest, and more. But before any fact card finds its home, we dive deep. And we mean deep.
Learning at Every Level
What makes this project so special is that every child can take part, regardless of age or ability. Our approach is tailored to meet each child exactly where they are:
Touch — sensory exploration, particularly for our CP and wheelchair-dependent children
Art and Crafts — creative hands-on making
Visual — YouTube videos and picture resources
Storytelling — bringing each species to life through narrative
Did You Know?
Tomorrow we are diving into the Colossal Squid (and it is mind-blowing).
Did you know the Colossal Squid is actually bigger than the Giant Squid and is roughly the size of a bus? And it holds the record for the largest eyeballs of any animal on earth, measuring around 27 cm across. The children are absolutely fascinated and honestly, so are we!
A Special Thank You
None of this would be possible without Bundu NetworX, who generously donates internet access to Thandi House. This allows us to research each species, stream YouTube documentaries, and print worksheets and materials for each child. It is a gift that keeps giving, every single day.
Learning should never just fill a mind. It should light one up.
