Thandi House

Our Story

Thandi House is a non-profit organisation established in 2009 by Mark and Rene Morcom. Located in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, we are built on the philosophy that every child deserves a loving and nurturing family environment.

The effects of early childhood trauma can be profound and long-lasting, but research has shown that children who experience stable, supportive relationships can recover and develop resilience. We promote a family-like environment and prioritise building strong bonds with the children.

These relationships provide the foundation for healthy development, help children overcome trauma, and give them a sense of belonging that is essential to their well-being.

Our Belief

Every child deserves to be loved, cared for, and given the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances. We believe in the power of stable, supportive relationships to help children recover and develop resilience.

Our Approach

We are dedicated to supporting the emotional, spiritual, physical, and educational development of the children in our care. We work tirelessly to ensure that each child has access to individualised attention, support, resources, and the love they require to heal and thrive.

This is achieved by our dedicated team of caregivers and a teacher's aide, as well as our team of volunteers, including speech therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers. Our goal is to help the children at Thandi House not only survive but thrive.

Care & Support

Transforming Lives

Through your generous support, we've been able to make a significant difference in the lives of hundreds of children. Many of our children have come to us in critical conditions, suffering from severe neglect, malnutrition, and untreated medical conditions. With proper care, nutrition, and medical attention, we've witnessed remarkable transformations in their physical health and emotional well-being.

Our holistic approach ensures that each child receives not just the basics of food and shelter, but also the emotional support, education, and life skills they need to overcome their traumatic pasts and build brighter futures.

Creating Lasting Change

Beyond immediate care, we focus on long-term outcomes for our children. Our educational support programs ensure that every child receives the resources and encouragement they need to excel academically. While our children are still on their educational journeys, we are proud of their progress and dedication, and we remain committed to supporting them every step of the way.

We've seen our children grow into confident young adults who are breaking the cycle of poverty and trauma. Many have gone on to further education or vocational training, and some have even returned to volunteer with us, helping the next generation of children at Thandi House.

Every donation, volunteer hour, and prayer contributes to this lasting impact, creating ripple effects that extend far beyond our walls and into the broader community.
